APPLICATIONS

Picramic Acid, 2,4-Dinitro-6-aminophenol, is a toxic, explosive, highly oxidative dark red crystalline solid with bitter taste; soluble in water, alcohol, chloroform, acetic acid and most organic solvents; melts at 169 C; derived from phenol through nitration reaction or from chlorobenzene. Picramic acid itself as well as its metallic salts are highly explosive. It can be used in pyrotechnics and rocket fuel. It should be transported with 25 - 35% water. In addition to pyrotechnic application, picramic acid and its salts are used to make dyes (acid, chrome), insecticides and as a colorimetric reagent to determine albumin.
