GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Dipentene is a terpene liquid found in various volatile oils such as cardamon, mace, nutmeg , turpentine oil. This term is also reffered to the racemic mixture of limonene. Dipentene is used as a solvent for resins, alkyds and waxes and to make paints, enamels, lacquers and polishes. It is used as a perfumery composition for soaps, personal care products and cosmetics. It is used as an intermediate for terpene resins, carvone, terylene, and rubber chemicals. It is used as an oils dispersant, metal dryer. It is used as a substitute for chlorinated solvents in degreasing metals for cleaning in the electronic industry and the printing industry. alpha-Limonene has been used as a gallstone solubilizer in pharmaceutical industry.

Limonene is a colourless liquid at room temperatures with a strong smell of orange-lemon; water-insoluble, boils at 176 C. Limonene has a chiral molecule. (R)-enantiomer (d-limonene), the principal industrial source including food manufacturing and some medicines, is the major component of the oil extracted from citrus rind. The tech grade is used both as a straight solvent and as a water dilutable product. This d-limonene or racemised dipentene are used either in industrial (e.g. making paint solids) or in cleaning products. In contrast to the lemon scent of d-limonene, l-limonene has a piney, turpentine odor. Limonene is very common in cosmetic products as well as in household products. Limonene can be converted to cymene, a monoterpene. Cymene has a benzene ring with a methyl and an isopropyl group. It is insoluble in water, but miscible with ethanol and ether. Most naturally occurring form is para-cymene. Thymol, a common depressant, is a derivative of cymene
