Product Overview:

  • DOW™ di-n-butyl ether is a clear, colorless liquid with a mild, ether-like odor. For further details, see Product Description.
  • DOW di-n-butyl ether is used primarily as a specialty solvent, especially in the production of recordable compact discs (CD-Rs). It can also be used as a solvent in degreasing products and a variety of polymer-based coatings. For further details, see Product Uses.
  • Dow does not sell di-n-butyl ether for direct consumer use, but it can be present at low levels in a limited number of consumer products such as degreasers, lacquers, and food additives. For further details, see Exposure Potential.
  • Eye or prolonged skin contact with this material may cause moderate irritation with local redness. Vapor may cause irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract (nose and throat), Vapor concentrations are obtainable that could be hazardous on single exposure. This material has very low toxicity if swallowed.5 For further details, see Health Information.
  • DOW di-n-butyl ether is biodegradable, unlikely to accumulate in the food chain, and is slightly to moderately toxic to aquatic organisms on an acute basis.6,7 For further details, see Environmental Information.
  • DOW di-n-butyl ether is flammable. It is stable at normal handling and use temperatures, but can decompose at elevated temperatures. Avoid contact with acids and strong oxidizers. Avoid contact with air (oxygen) to prevent the formation of explosive peroxides.8 For further details, see Physical Hazard Information.
