APPLICATIONS

Oil red O (C.I. Solvent Red 27) is a fat-soluble diazo dye used to identify low-taxed or high sulfur fuels. C.I. Solvent Red 164 and Oil red OB (C.I. Solvent Red 26) are similar products for application.

Oil Red OB (CAS RN: 4477-79-6): 1-((2,5-Dimethyl-4-((2-methylphenyl)azo)phenyl)azo)-2-naphthol
Solvent Red 164 (CAS RN: 71819-51-7; 92257-31-3): a mixture of isomers that are similar to Solvent Red 26 with more aromatic and aliphatic branches to increase solubility in fuels.

Oil Red O is also used as a composition of colored smokes, to dye plastics and as a lipid/lipoprotein staining.
