Topiramate is a sulfamated monose that interferes with calcium and sodium channels; used as an anticonvulsant in the treatment of some seizures  including jerking of limbs, frothing at the mouth, and loss of consciousness due to a lesion in a specific cerebral cortex. Symptoms vary with different lesion locations. It is a white crystalline powder with a bitter taste; administered orally; soluble in acetone, chloroform, dimethylsulfoxide, ethanol and alkaline solutions; melting point 122 - 126 C. The chemical designation is 2,3:4,5-Bis-O-(1-methylethylidene)- beta-D-fructopyranose sulfamate.
