GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Pioglitazone, belongs to the drug class of thiazolidinedione, is used to decrease insulin resistance. It is an antidiabetic agent to manage  a certain type of diabetes like NIDDM (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, sugar diabetes) called type 2 diabetes. It improves glycemic control while reducing circulating insulin levels. Its chemical designation is 5-[4-[2-(5-Ethyl-2-pyridinyl) ethoxy] benzyl] thiazolidine-2,4-dione. There are two enantiomers of pioglitazone but no differences were found in their activities. Thus, the racemic mixture is used in the pharmacologic. The hydrochloride salt of pioglitazone is a white crystalline powder with no odur; administered orally; insoluble in water and ether; slightly soluble in acetone, acetonitrile and alcohol; soluble in DMF and DMSO.
