GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Halohydrin is an alkane compound in which one carbon has a halogen substituent and the other carbon has a hydroxyl substituent. Halohydrin undergoes internal SN2 reaction to an ether (epoxide). Certain halohydrin is used as a solvent and as a cleaning agent. 3-Bromo-1-Propanol, trimethylene bromohydrin, is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of target molecules.

Glycerol alpha-monochlorohydrin is used as an intermediate to prepare pharmaceuticals and other compounds ( for example, glycidol ethers, esters and amine). It is reported to affect the fertility of male rodents and used as a raticide (chemosterillant). It is used in explosives to lower down freezing points.
