CEFALEXIN MONOHYDRATE

GENERAL

Cefalexin is a semisynthetic 1st generation cephalosporin antibiotic Inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis. It is used especially in the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections and is intended for oral administration. Cephalosporins differ from penicillins in the structure of the bicyclic ring system. Cefalexin has an unsubstituted methyl group at the 3-position and a D-phenylglycyl group as substituent at the 7-amino position. It's chemical name is 7-(D-alpha-Amino-alpha-phenyl acetamido)- 3-methyl-3-cephem- 4-carboxylic acid. Commercial cefalexin is available in a monohydrate form which is a white crystalline powder with a bitter taste and low solubility in water.
