GENERAL DESCRIPTION  & APPLICATIONS

Cathartics promote or encourage defecation by accelerating the passage of feces through the large intestine, by influencing the consistency and amount of stool, and by facilitating the elimination of feces from the rectum. The terms laxative and cathartic reflect the typical intensity and latency of effect. A cathartic usually produces prompt fluid evacuation, while a laxative usually produces a soft formed stool over a protracted period. Cathartics or laxatives can be classified as belows:

  • Bulk-forming agents
    • Psyllium
    • Methylcellulose
    • Polycarbophils
  • Osmotics
    • Saline
    • Cleansing laxative
      • Polyethylene glycol
    • Hyperosmolar laxative
      • Lactulose
      • Sorbitol
      • Glycerin suppositories
  • Stimulants
    • Cascara
    • Sennosides
    • Phenolphthalein
    • Bisacodyl
    • Casanthranol
    • Aloe Vera
    • Castor Oil
  • Stool softener
    • Docusate Calcium
    • Docusate Sodium
    • Docusate Potassium
  • Lubricants/Emollients
    • Mineral oils

Sennoside: either hydroxyanthracene glycosides (designated A and B) derived from senna as the calcium salts; pale brownish hygroscopic powder; soluble in water and alcohol. They are used as a cathartic; administered orally. The chemical designation is 5,5'-bis(beta-D-gulcopyranosyloxy)-9,9',10,10'- tetrahydro-4,4'-dihydroxy-10,10'-dioxo [9,9'-bianthracene]-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid calciium salt.
