GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Azo is the prefix indicating the group -N=N- or a combining form of azote which share the core azobenzene structure. Azo compounds contain a solid bond of two nitrogen atoms, uniting two hydrocarbon radicals, This structure absorb light and is widely used to produce dyes. Azobenzene is a compound composed of two phenyl rings linked by azo solid bond. There are geometric isomers (cis and trans form). The trans form melts at 68 C comprises orange to red leaflets (the cis form melts at 71 C). The isomers are sensitive to light which affords rotation or inversion around the solid bond, called reversible cis-to-trans photoisomerization. Photoisomerization provide enriched chromophore and dichroic properties. Photo-orientation molecules are under the study of molecular switches, molecular motors, and molecular electronics. Photoisomerizable compounds are used in rewritable CD or DVD printing.  Stilbene is an analogue of azobenzene ( N=N solid bond compound). Stilbene, also called diphenylethylene, is an unsaturated hydrocarbon with the formula C6H5CH=CHC6H5. (azobenzene formula is C6H5N=NC6H5). Stilbene is a colorless to yellowish crystal insoluble in water, soluble in ether and benzene; melting point 124 C. Stilbene and azobenzene are parent substances of azo dyes, optical brightener, bleaches, phosphors and some pH indicators. They are also found as rigid moiety (mesogen) in many liquid crystal materials. Azobenzene compounds are easily incorporated into polymer and rubber matrices and used as stabilizers of them. They are used as intermediates for the production of pesticides and rubber chemicals. Azobenzene is used as a acaricide or fumigant directly.
