CALCIUM CHLORIDE HANDBOOK-A Guide to Properties, Forms, Storage and Handling

Local: GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Calcium Chloride is a white deliquescent powder which is soluble in water and ethanol, with melting point at 782 C, boiling point at 1600 C and specific gravity of 2.15. Mono, Di and Hexahydrate forms are existing. But hexahydrate form loses 4H2O at room temperature. It is formed as a byproduct of the Solvay process, also called ammonia-soda process to make sodium carbonate from calcium carbonate and sodium chloride.  It is also prepared by dissolving calcium carbonate or calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid. It is used chiefly for dust control on unpaved roads and as a roadway deicer. Other uses are waste water treatment, brine refrigeration systems, tire weighting, concrete acceleration and as a calcium source in chemical processing.
