GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATIONS |
||
| Retinoic acid, belongs to the group vitamin A, is an oxidized derivative of retinol, which plays a role in the development and growth of bone, in the regulating epithelial cell structure, and eyesight. Retinol is taken in a precursor form of retinyl esters from animal foods like milk and eggs. The body cells convert precursors to retinol (a 20-carbon primary alcohol), and then the de-esterified alcohol can be converted to metabolically active retinal (the aldehyde of retinol) and retinoic acid (the oxidized form of retinol) formed by carboxylation of retinal. The retinal is used in vision functions as a component of photoreceptor pigment in the retina of the eye, whereas retinoic acid plays role in non-vision functions - regulating the growth and differentiation of normal and malignant cells. Accordingly, retinoic acid is useful as an ingredient in the treatment of acne medicinally. In pharmacology, tretinoin means all-trans retinoic acid; 13-cis isomer is called isotretinoin. Tretinoin is used to induce maturation of acute promyelocytic leukemia cells in culture and in the treatment of disorders of keratinization topically, and orally in the treatment of acute promyelocytic anemia as an antineoplastic. Isotretinoin inhibits the secretion of sebum and alters the lipid composition of the skin surface. It is used systemically for treatment of severe cystic and conglobulate acne. | ||
