GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||||||||||||||||||||
Ellagic acid,
A fused
four ring compound, is
a compound which can belong to the class of polyphenol
antioxidants, capable of scavenging free
radicals and regulating certain metal chelation reactions with potential health benefits.
Ellagic acid is found in numerous fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, and pomegranates.
It occur free or exist as a form of more water-soluble combined
ellagitannin.
Ellagic acid,
as an antioxidant
with potential health benefits, are under research
for health purposes such as anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic.
It is known as a protector of the DNA double helix from alkylating agent injury
and as an activator in blood coagulation. It is used
as a dye (Alizarine Yellow). The chemical designation
is 2,3,7,8-Tetrahydroxy(1)benzopyrano(5,4,3-cde)(1)-benzopyran-5,10-dione.
