GENERAL
DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS
|
|
Cyclic adenosine monophosphate
(cAMP) is a cyclic isomer of adenylic
acid containing
one phosphate group which is esterified to both the 3'- and 5'-positions on the
sugar moiety. It is an adenine nucleotide derived from adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It
is linked
neurotransmitter- or hormone-induced receptor stimulation. It is a second messenger and a key intracellular regulator,
functioning as a mediator of activity for a number of hormones. It binds to protein kinases
(cAMP-dependent
kinases) to release catalytically active subunits. It also regulate the
passage of Ca2+ through ion channels. |
